With extensive experience and state-of-the-art technologies, Creative Proteomics uses highly sensitive LC-ESI/MS method for the rapid identification and quantification of ergosterol in fungi, which can satisfy the needs of academic and industrial study.
Ergosterol (Erg) is the major sterol present in plasma and mitochondrial membranes of fungi and functions to maintain membrane fluidity, permeability, and structure. Erg also forms lipid rafts, which are enriched with many biologically important molecules such as efflux pumps, sodium and potassium pumps, receptors, and nutrient transporters. These microdomains are central to a variety of cellular processes, stress responses, and adaptations to the environment; maintaining lipid rafts is critical for proper functioning of the cells. It also has multiple functions in growth regulation and is a precursor to vitamin D2. Because of its crucial functions, unique structural properties, and particular biosynthetic steps, ergosterol is the target of the majority of clinically available antifungals.
For the analysis of ergosterol, Creative Proteomics developed a liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) method to monitor ergosterol biosynthesis. The combination of MS instrument and liquid chromatography (LC) can effectively separate target lipid molecules from complex samples.
